Steve Matteson digitized the roman faithfully to Goudys original and designed the companion italic in the spirit of Goudys style. In his words, he believed he was still attempting to find himself as a designer. Thirty years later he was shown the design and could hardly recollect its creation. It is based on the 2" wood engravings Frederic Goudy made for his book The Trajan Capitals - a seminal book about the history of the Roman letter. These letterforms predate the work of Father Catichs exhaustive study of the Trajan Column and, while remarkably faithful to the inscription, have Goudys interpretive fingerprints.
